West Mugirango legislator Stephen Mogaka has advocated for the boda boda industry growth and emphasized the need for structured mechanism to empower young people engaged in the sector.
Speaking in Parliament, Mogaka underscored the sector’s role as a major source of employment for the youth across the country. He described the industry as an economic lifeline, ensuring that money circulates and directly reaches the pockets of thousands of young Kenyans.
“I do not know what we would be doing with our army of youth if the majority were not engaged in the boda boda sector,” he stated.
Mogaka was offering his remarks during a motion aimed at supporting and mainstreaming the sector.
He said that to enhance safety and professionalism in the industry, there were plans to offer scholarships to boda boda riders in his constituency.
This initiative will pro3vide training in road safety, first aid, and basic auto repair skills, equipping riders with essential knowledge to protect themselves and their passengers.
“Boda boda is perhaps the only mode of transport that takes passengers from door to door. In terms of convenience, it remains the most accessible and affordable means of travel,” he remarked.
Drawing insights from his international engagements, Mogaka referenced China’s advancements in the boda boda sector, where motorcycles are now being propelled by solar energy instead of petrol.
He urged Kenya to consider adopting similar environmentally friendly and cost-efficient technologies.
To support riders in acquiring motorcycles affordably, he proposed a hire purchase financing model akin to the African Retail Traders (ART), which enabled Kenyans to acquire property on friendly credit.
He cautioned against exploitative lending practices by commercial financiers.
“Shylocks and some other financiers have ripped off those seeking loans to buy boda bodas. We need a structured, fair financing plan to help young Kenyans achieve their dreams,” he stated.
Mogaka reiterated his full support for the motion, urging Parliament to develop policies that safeguard and uplift the sector, which remains a pillar of economic empowerment for thousands of youth.
Earlier, Mogaka took a moment to recognize and welcome students from Kisii High School to the 13th Parliament.
The school was on an academic tour.
He also acknowledged Kebirigo Boys’ High School, one of the top institutions in his constituency, highlighting its recent academic achievements.
