Twenty instructors drawn from various Vocational Training Centres in Kisii County have completed a specialized training programme aimed at empowering them with entrepreneurial skills to support youth and enhance local livelihoods.
Beneficiaries will cascade the knowledge to others and contribute to reduction of child labour.
The training, conducted under the Start and Improve Your Business ( SIYB) project, was facilitated by the international Labor Organization (ILO) in collaboration with Accelerating action for the elimination of Child Labor in supply chains (ACCEL Africa Project).
Hellen Rintari, the National Project coordinator ACCEL, said the initiative will significantly impact the lives of Kisii residents.
It would equip young people with skills to start, improve and sustain their business.
“This project focuses on four Key areas: Livelihoods, occupational safety and health and transitioning youths into decent jobs,” Rintari said.
Eric Ongeri, the Chief Executive Committee Member (CECM) for education and vocational training centers, welcomed the initiative.
He noted that the 20 instructors had completed their training and were expected to transfer their knowledge to at least 100 trainees by the end of this year.
“These instructors now have the tools to guide and mentor upcoming entrepreneurs,” Ongeri added.
Beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the opportunity.
Mercy Kwamboka, one of the participants, said she now feels empowered.
“I can now generate business ideas, start them and help others grow their ventures,” Kwamboka said.
The training marks a step forward in promoting self reliance and economic growth among youth in Kisii County.
With high levels of joblessness and poverty, child labour is prevalent in Africa.
In rural areas, child labour is seen in sectors such as tea and coffee farming.
