Gender Principal Secretary (PS) Anne Wang’ombe led a tree planting activity in Kisii where she emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable living.
Wang’ombe said residents have a role to play in planting and protecting trees as Kenya seeks to mitigate possible debilitating effects of environmental degradation.
“We have not only planted trees today, but also planted life and hope for our future generations,” she said.
The PS urged the community to embrace tree planting as a way of safeguarding the environment.
“Trees are life, they contribute immensely to keeping our environment clean and fresh. Let us keep and protect them,” Wang’ombe said.
Also present at the event was County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for environment Timothy Arege, who echoed the PS ‘s sentiments, noting the vital role trees play in people’s daily lives.
“Without trees there is no life, no rain or even firewood. To us who stay here , this is our inheritance so let’s conserve the trees that have been planted here today,” Arege said.
The County Forest Conservator Opiyo Safari called for unity in conservation efforts, emphasizing that trees should not be a source of conflict.
“Trees have no boundaries. Let’s stop the issue of boundaries when it comes to the care of trees, and let’s take care of these that have been planted,” he stated.
The tree planting initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to restore Kenya’s forest cover and mitigate the effects of climate change.
