In the sterilized silence of a room at MP Shah Hospital, Eric Ong’uti Ayuka lies tethered to hope by buzzing machines and medication, his eyes tracing distant dreams across the ceiling.

Ayuka, 39, is not only battling complications from a recent kidney transplant abroad; he and his family are now grappling with a mounting hospital bill that has crossed Ksh. 6 million.

Having already paid approximately Ksh. 1.6 million, the burden left to bear has become overwhelming.

Last year, Ayuka was flown to India with a suitcase full of prayers, a failing kidney, a willing donor, and a devoted caretaker.

The trip was made possible by the generosity of family, friends, and well-wishers who rallied around the cause.

The transplant was successful. But upon his return to Kenya, complications set in.

Now back in a Nairobi hospital, Ayuka finds himself stitched together by science but slowly unraveling under the strain of sickness and skyrocketing medical expenses.

The renewed life he had hoped for trembles beneath the crushing weight of financial despair.

The family—originally from Mong’oni and now settled in Ekerenyo, Nyamira North—has been pushed to the edge emotionally and financially.

“We fundraised to take him to India for a kidney transplant, and the procedure was successful,” says his elder brother, Wilson Ayuka.

“But complications emerged after he returned, and we had to admit him to MP Shah, where he’s been receiving specialized care for several weeks now.”

The family’s resources have long since dried up.

His employer-provided medical cover has been exhausted, and they now rely solely on the kindness of relatives, friends, and strangers.

During his healthy years, Ayuka was a vibrant civil engineer, working diligently for the County Assembly of Nyamira.

Now, his days are spent under the care of five specialized doctors.

A summarized medical report seen by this writer confirms that Ayuka has undergone several critical procedures, including a graft biopsy and steroid pulse therapy.

While his condition has since stabilized, the financial storm continues to rage.

To help shoulder the immense cost of his care, the family has set up a hospital Paybill number and is appealing to the public for support:

Hospital: MP Shah Hospital

Paybill Number: 824600

Account Number: 102503140069
