Twelve Nyamira MCAs in Trouble Over “Absenteeism”

By KPC Reporter

Twelve members of the County Assembly of Nyamira will know their fate next week—whether they will continue serving in office or lose their seats.

According to Speaker Thadeus Nyabaro, the MCAs allegedly skipped eight consecutive plenary sittings without official approval, breaching both the law and the Assembly’s Standing Orders.

Nine of the twelve have already appeared before the Powers and Privileges Committee, chaired by Bonyamatuta MCA Julius Matwere.

They vigorously defended their absence, while others pleaded for leniency.

Three MCAs—Joel Ombongi (Bokeira Ward), and nominees Martha Marua and Edina Obara—sent legal representation to the hearing.

Some of the accused are said to have privately pleaded with the Speaker before facing the committee, seeking his intervention.

By law, the committee has authority to suspend or expel any member found guilty of absenteeism without authorization.

Among those named is Nyambega Gisesa, Chairman of Governor Amos Nyaribo’s United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party.

The twelve, including the ousted Majority Leader Abel Mose (Magwagw Ward), reportedly joined forces with former Speaker Enock Okero in forming an illegal “Bunge Mashinani,” aided by a handful of staff.

Other MCAs facing disciplinary action include Lameck Sikweya, Janerose Nafula, Zipporah Matundura, Lydia Mosiere, Elijah Abere, Beatrice Onyancha, and Jeriah Nyakang’i.

They are all said to be closely allied with Governor Nyaribo—a dynamic that adds intrigue to the committee’s final decision.

Aborted plans

The High Court sitting in Bomet declared the activities of Bunge Mashinani unlawful as of October 24 last year—shortly after Okero was impeached, ending his two-year tenure.

Sources revealed that the twelve had plotted to impeach Speaker Nyabaro.

The plan was foiled after one member reportedly leaked the details.

Committee members handling the matter include Charles Keganda (Bosamaro Ward), Vincent Benecha (Kiabonyoru Ward), Alfayo Ngereza (Mekenene Ward) and Samuel Ogeto (Manga Ward).

Abigail Matini (nominated), Priscilla Nyatichi (nominated), Josephine Atunga (nominated), Minda Riechi (Magombo Ward), Juma Matunda (Special Elect), and Michele Omwoyo (Special Elect) are also committee members.

Speaker Nyabaro recused himself from chairing the hearing, handing over the session to Deputy Chair Julius Matwere, a seasoned unionist.

The committee finalized its report on Tuesday.

A special sitting is scheduled for Monday, when the Assembly will debate the findings and vote to determine the MCAs’ fate.
