The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Party has condemned the arrest and secretive detention of Gitonga Mukunji, Member of Parliament (MP) for Manyatta, during the SabaSaba protests on Monday.

According to the party, Mukunji was apprehended around 3:00 PM in the Mang’u area while driving his vehicle.

He was initially booked at Kibii Police Station under OB No. 06/07/07/2025 at 3:53 PM, but was later transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Juja Police Station.

However, his current whereabouts remain unknown, and his vehicle is still parked at Kibii Police Station, the party claimed.

The Occurrence Book (OB), reportedly contains no record of his exit, raising serious concerns about due process and transparency.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kibii allegedly informed UPA officials that Mukunji was being held on suspicion of incitement to violence.

However, the party claims that police have refused to provide any further information to his legal team or family, including his wife and advocate Njiru Ndegwa, who are actively seeking answers.

“This lack of transparency and apparent disregard for legal rights is unacceptable in a democratic society,” said UPA Chairman Nyambega Gisesa.

“We demand the immediate release of (Hon.) Gitonga Mukunji, full disclosure of his whereabouts, and an end to any attempts to suppress his rights.”

The party also expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the deaths of several young protesters during the SabaSaba demonstrations, which were held nationwide to demand government accountability and economic reforms.

UPA condemned what it described as the use of excessive force by security agencies and called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.

“These young Kenyans, exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest, have lost their lives in circumstances that demand urgent answers,” the statement read.

“We stand in solidarity with the families and loved ones of the victims.”

The party called on the government to uphold constitutional freedoms, ensure justice for the victims of the protests, and restore public trust in the rule of law.
