Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Kenya also commended regional and international partners for their coordinated efforts in advancing negotiations and de-escalating tensions.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs welcomed the harmonization of the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes under the joint leadership of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The merger, supported by the African Union (AU), aims to streamline mediation efforts and enhance the effectiveness of conflict resolution mechanisms in the region.

The statement said that Kenya acknowledged the appointment of additional facilitators by the AU Commission and praised their contributions in navigating the complex dynamics of the DRC conflict.

Further, it emphasized that this unified approach is essential to preventing the crisis from becoming one of Africa’s long-standing and overlooked conflicts.

Mutual understanding

The government also highlighted the constructive role of the State of Qatar, particularly its hosting of a trilateral meeting on 18 March 2025 involving President Felix Tshisekedi of the DRC, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Kenya credited the meeting with fostering mutual understanding and advancing peace talks between the DRC, Rwanda, and the AFC/M23 group.

Additionally, Kenya commended the United States of America for its mediation efforts, which led to a landmark agreement between the DRC and Rwanda.

The deal includes commitments to cease hostilities, uphold territorial integrity, end support for armed groups, and establish a Joint Security Coordination Mechanism.

Kenya urged both Qatar and the United States to maintain their support for the consolidated Luanda-Nairobi process, describing it as vital to achieving long-term peace.

The statement also called on all parties to honor the agreements reached and emphasized the importance of sustained, coordinated, and context-sensitive interventions to address the enduring challenges in Eastern DRC.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi reiterated Kenya’s dedication to African-led solutions, while recognizing the indispensable role of international cooperation.

He called for collective action to build a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for the people of the DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.
