Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable and sustainable electricity access for all Kenyans.

Wandayi admitted that power as a critical driver of national development.

Speaking on Kenya Television Network (KTN), Wandayi addressed the pressing issue of high electricity costs and outlined key ministry priorities, including reducing energy disparities and modernizing infrastructure.

He attributed the elevated costs to technical and commercial losses during transmission and distribution, promising targeted interventions with government support.

“The ministry is committed to clean, renewable, and affordable energy access,” said Wandayi.

“We will modernize our infrastructure to meet the growing demands of our population and ensure that power reaches even the most remote households.”

The CS, previously Minority Leader in the National Assembly, emphasized the importance of constructive political dialogue and inclusive governance.

Tone down on criticism

He advocated for leaders to prioritize correction over criticism, urging collaboration across party lines to advance national goals.

In his oversight role, Wandayi highlighted the Cabinet’s scrutiny of Auditor General reports, reiterating collective responsibility and accountability within government operations.

During a recent tour of Kitui and Tharaka Nithi Counties, the CS launched new electrification projects in underserved constituencies, pledging significant coverage within two years.

“Fifteen million Kenyans will benefit from expanded power access,” he said.

“Many rural schools will be connected, allowing them to compete with their urban counterparts.”

Wandayi echoed President Ruto’s pledge to uplift marginalized communities, positioning universal electricity access as a cornerstone of the administration’s development agenda.

The ministry aims to achieve this goal by 2030, bridging regional gaps and enhancing equity.

He concluded by calling on Kenyans to support the ministry’s efforts in upgrading the power grid: “Together, we must improve and modernize the infrastructure to sustainably meet our energy needs.”
