Bungoma Media FC emerged as champions of the Safaricom 5-Aside Greater Western Regional Tournament after defeating Kakamega A FC 3–2 in a thrilling final held on Sunday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

The closely contested match showcased the skill and determination of both teams, with Bungoma Media FC ultimately edging out their rivals to claim the top spot.

For their victory, Bungoma Media FC received the tournament’s grand prize of KES 50,000, while Kakamega A FC, as runners-up, walked away with KES 30,000.

In addition to the cash awards, both teams were treated to exciting giveaways, including power banks and shopping vouchers, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the event.

The tournament was part of Safaricom’s regional media engagement initiative and served as a curtain-raiser for the M-PESA Sokoni Caravan Tour, which kicks off today in Migori.

This week-long activation is a key component of the M-PESA @ 18 celebrations, designed to appreciate customers and give back to communities that have supported the brand over the years.

Fun and excitement

Speaking during the event, Maurice Alal, a journalist from Kisumu, praised the initiative, describing it as an excellent platform for engagement and networking.

He noted that the tournament was full of fun and excitement and expressed hope that Safaricom would continue to support such events, even suggesting the possibility of expanding the initiative into a national tournament for journalists.

The tournament brought together fourteen media teams from across the Greater Western region, including representatives from Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Kisumu counties.

It was a celebration of regional unity and collaboration, with journalists coming together not only to compete but also to connect and share experiences.

Beyond the tournament, Safaricom has organized a series of customer engagement activities throughout the week, aimed at promoting capacity building, business growth, and community empowerment.

Among these is Safaricom Safire Connect, which brings together farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, and stakeholders for a day of learning and networking.

Another key event is Safaricom Hook, a two-day youth empowerment program focused on financial literacy, tech-forward upskilling, career readiness, and cultural expression as a source of income.

Additionally, the Grow with Safaricom Business initiative targets businesses of all sizes with innovative tools and credit facilities designed to help them thrive in today’s digital economy.

Other highlights of the week include the Wezesha Mama program, the M-PESA Agents Awards, and a vibrant road caravan delivering customer delights across the region.

Through these initiatives, Safaricom continues to demonstrate its commitment to community engagement and inclusive development, celebrating 18 years of M-PESA by investing in the people and regions that have been integral to its success.
