Kenya has entered a new chapter in media professionalism and accountability with the official enforcement of the Code of Conduct for Media Practice, 2025.
Stakeholders have seen this as a landmark development for the country’s media landscape.
According to a press statement issued by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), the revised Code was published in a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 70 on 14 May 2025, under the guidance of the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo.
It replaces the previous Code under the Media Council Act, 2013, marking a comprehensive overhaul of journalism ethics and practice in Kenya.
The revamped Code was necessitated by a High Court ruling that declared the existing Broadcasting Code unconstitutional, directing MCK to develop new age-appropriate standards aimed at protecting children and vulnerable populations.
“The new Code tackles emerging challenges in the dynamic media landscape, including ethical AI use, responsible user-generated content, and protection of vulnerable groups,” the statement reads.
The Council emphasized that the new guidelines are the result of extensive consultations across the media fraternity, including legal, academic, and civil society sectors.
MCK hailed the National Assembly’s ratification and the formal confirmation by the Clerk of the National Assembly as a major milestone for media regulation in Kenya.
“This is a clarion call for progress. It demands accountability from the media and welcomes critique from the government, fostering trust and mutual respect,” the Council stated.
Further, MCK noted that the Code is expected to streamline dispute resolution and ensure swift, fair complaint handling.
The Council applauded the media community for their commitment to the transformative Code and reaffirmed its dedication to promoting a media environment built on integrity, fearlessness, and impact.
“This is the dawn of a new era for ethical, fearless and impactful journalism in Kenya,” statement said.
