The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has ushered in a new phase of leadership following the appointment and reappointment of several distinguished individuals to its governing Council.

This development signals renewed commitment to the promotion of ethical journalism, media freedom, and professional standards across the country.

At the helm is Joseph Maina Muiruri, appointed as Chairperson of the Council.

His leadership is expected to bring seasoned oversight and strategic direction at a time when the media landscape is rapidly evolving.

Muiruri is not a stranger to the Council, having served in the same capacity before.

Joining him are Council members Tabitha Mutemi, Timothy Wanyonyi Chetambe, Susan Karago, and Joram Temesi Mukani, the representative from the Ministry.

MCK has welcomed the new members with optimism, citing their diverse expertise and shared dedication to safeguarding the integrity of the media.

In a statement seen by KPC, the Council underscored the importance of strong leadership in promoting a transparent and accountable media sector that meets public expectations.

These appointments come as the sector faces complex challenges, including digital disruption, growing threats to press freedom, and the need for robust regulation.

Stakeholders have lauded the new leadership, emphasizing that visionary guidance is vital in balancing innovation with responsibility.

Recent engagements hosted by the Council bringing together journalists, editors, and media owners have reinforced the urgency of sector-wide reforms.

Key priorities highlighted in these forums include strengthening editorial independence, scaling up capacity-building efforts, and enhancing journalist safety, particularly for those reporting in high-risk environments.
