A formal impeachment motion against Kericho Governor Dr. Erick Mutai has been filed at the County Assembly by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony.

The petitioner is set to disclose allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office against the governor.

An official letter to that effect was received by the Office of the Clerk on Tuesday, August 6, 2025.

The letter, bearing the Kericho County Assembly stamp, confirms that the motion has been certified as compliant with Standing Order No. 70 and is expected to be scheduled for debate.

“Kindly find attached the following documents for your action,” Rogony wrote.

“Proposed motion for the removal by impeachment of Dr. Erick Mutai as Kericho County Governor; evidence in support of the said proposed motion; and signed list of members in support of the proposed motion.”

The Speaker of the Assembly confirmed receipt and compliance of the motion, noting in a handwritten comment: “The motion complies with our standing order No. 70.”

Further directives indicate the matter is to be forwarded to the Assembly Business Committee for scheduling.

This dramatic political development comes amid growing concerns over governance in Kericho County.

Reports of internal rifts and accountability questions have dominated the county public discourse for some time.

A past attempt to impeach the governor flopped.

Although the exact grounds for the impeachment have not been publicly disclosed, sources close to the assembly suggest the motion may be linked to financial mismanagement, misuse of office, or failure to uphold constitutional responsibilities.

Political observers note that the filing of such a motion signifies deep fractures within the county leadership and could trigger a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Mutai, who was elected in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, has not yet responded publicly to the impeachment motion.

However, allies within the county executive have dismissed the move as politically motivated and vowed to challenge it.

“This is a witch-hunt being driven by forces who are uncomfortable with the governor’s firm stance on transparency and budget reforms,” said one source close to the governor’s office, who requested anonymity.

The motion is expected to be tabled in the Assembly once the Business Committee meets and agrees on the schedule.

Under Article 181 of the Kenyan Constitution, a governor may be removed from office on grounds of gross violation of the Constitution, crimes under national or international law, abuse of office, or gross misconduct.
