The County Government of Busia has acknowledged an ongoing investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
This follows a coordinated search operation targeting county offices and homes of six senior officials.
The operation, conducted on Wednesday, is part of a probe into alleged procurement irregularities, conflict of interest, unexplained wealth, and suspected loss of public funds.
According to the EACC, tenders allegedly awarded to companies linked to the families and close associates of county officials during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years are at the centre of the inquiry.
In a press statement released Thursday, Busia Governor Dr. Paul Nyongesa Otuoma’s administration described the investigation as a constitutionally mandated and necessary process, not unique to Busia nor unprecedented in the country.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law,” the statement read.
“Our officers have fully cooperated with the EACC investigators, including providing relevant documents and recording statements.”
The County Government emphasized that all individuals implicated remain innocent until proven otherwise and cautioned the public and media against making premature or prejudicial remarks.
“It is paramount that any such comments that could jeopardize the integrity of the investigations and the rights of the suspects be avoided,” stated Oscar Kwena Obonyo, Director of the Governor’s Press Unit, who signed the statement.
“Allegations do not amount to guilt.”
The county further called for a balanced approach that respects both public accountability and due process.
While urging restraint in commentary, the government reiterated its readiness to support the EACC in finalizing the investigation.
Governor Otuoma’s administration also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering services without interruption and maintaining a zero-tolerance stance on corruption.
“We will continue to strengthen our governance systems for purposes of ensuring integrity, transparency, and accountability,” the statement said.
