A tragic aircraft accident involving a medical evacuation jet operated by AMREF Flying Doctors occurred on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in fatalities and sparking a multi-agency investigation.

In a statement issued by AMREF Flying Doctors, the organization confirmed that one of its aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS with registration 5Y-FDM, crashed shortly after take-off from Wilson Airport.

The plane, which was en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, went down in the Mwihoho area of Nairobi around 2:17 PM local time.

AMREF expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “Our immediate focus is on the safety and well-being of those on board and providing full support to their families and colleagues.”

The organization is also extending necessary support to relevant authorities to aid the ongoing investigations.

“At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation,” the statement seen by KPC read.

The aircraft was reportedly on a medical mission when it crashed under still unclear circumstances.

AMREF has promised to share further information as it becomes available and has asked for patience from the public as investigations proceed.

“All official updates will be shared through AMREF Flying Doctors’ official website and social media channels,” said Stephen Gitau, the CEO and Accountable Manager.

Emergency responders, aviation investigators, and local authorities remain at the crash site, piecing together evidence to determine the cause of the fatal accident.
