The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted the appointment senior officers for a series of county assembly by-elections scheduled for 27th November 2025.
The announcement of returning and deputy returning officers was published in the latest edition of The Kenya Gazette.
It outlines the electoral roadmap for 17 wards across 13 counties, signaling the start of a critical democratic exercise.
Among the wards slated for by-elections are Kariobangi North in Nairobi City County, Nyansiongo, Nyamaiya, and Ekerenyo in Nyamira County, and Kabuchai/Chwele in Bungoma County.
The appointments include Catherine Chepkirui and Abdi Tadicha Roba, tasked with overseeing the integrity and efficiency of the polls.
The by-elections come at a time when Kenya’s electoral landscape is under renewed scrutiny, following recent calls for enhanced transparency and voter engagement.
The IEBC has emphasized its commitment to upholding constitutional mandates under Articles 84, 85, 88(4), 177, 193, and 194 of the Constitution, as well as the Elections Act and General Regulations.
Political parties and aspirants intending to participate must adhere to the stipulated timelines and requirements, including nomination procedures and campaign conduct.
The Commission urged stakeholders to submit their applications promptly and ensure compliance with electoral laws.
The by-elections are expected to shape local governance dynamics, especially in urban and semi-urban wards where service delivery and representation remain hot-button issues.
In Nyamira’s Nyamaiya ward for instance, residents have voiced concerns over stalled development projects since their representative died two years ago.
