The Ministry of Education has embarked on a baseline education survey in Kisii and Nyamira counties.

The undertaking is aimed at shaping the future of learning in the Gusii region through evidence-based planning.

In a circular, Nyamira County Director of Education Joshua K. Kaga announced the commencement of the exercise, following a recent directive issued by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba.

The directive stemmed from a stakeholders’ education conference that discussed the state of education in the two counties and called for accurate, reliable data to inform decision-making.

According to the statement, the survey will capture the achievements, challenges and opportunities in the education sector within Kisii and Nyamira.

The data gathered will be used to engage stakeholders in meaningful consultation and guide the way forward for the region’s schools.

The County Director emphasized that the information will be treated with strict confidentiality and applied only for its intended purpose.

A team of seasoned education experts has been appointed to carry out the data collection, analysis and report compilation.

The team will be led by Prof. Kennedy Getange, and will include Dr. Billiah Gisore, Dr. George Areba, and Dr. Nyamao Nyabwanga.

They will be supported by two research assistants.

The Ministry has appealed for maximum cooperation from education stakeholders, school administrators, teachers, parents and the general public during the data collection exercise.

The County Director described the initiative as a “noble undertaking” that requires collective support to succeed.

The baseline survey is expected to complement earlier interventions in the region’s education sector.

In recent years, Nyamira and Kisii have benefited from various school infrastructure projects, including a multi-billion-shilling upgrade programme and support from international partners.

CS Ogamba, who has been at the forefront of education reform since taking office in August 2024, has repeatedly emphasized the need for decisions grounded in solid research and context-specific data.

The Kisii and Nyamira survey is the latest demonstration of this approach, setting the stage for targeted investments and reforms that address real needs on the ground.
