The government is conducting civic engagement exercise for the dualling of the Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit and Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha roads.

Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir described the initiative as the beginning of a transformative journey for one of the country’s most ambitious road projects in recent history.

The project is being implemented under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) framework, drawing inspiration from the Nairobi Expressway model.

That expressway, now a vital artery in the capital, has demonstrated how private sector investment and expertise can deliver large-scale infrastructure with measurable public benefit.

Similarly, the Rironi–Mau Summit upgrade aims to harness private capital to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance safety along the Northern Corridor.

Stretching from Nairobi to Western Kenya and extending into Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and beyond, the Northern Corridor is one of East Africa’s busiest and most economically significant transport routes.

It carries the bulk of cargo and passenger traffic from the Port of Mombasa to landlocked countries in the region.

The dualling of this corridor is expected to ease congestion, improve logistics efficiency, and stimulate economic growth across multiple sectors—including real estate, agribusiness, tourism, and trade.

The construction phase will generate thousands of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers, while local suppliers and businesses along the corridor are poised to benefit from increased activity.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has emphasized that the project will include pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, and other non-motorized transport infrastructure to ensure accessibility and sustainability.

Article 10 of the Constitution enshrines transparency and inclusivity in national development, and the government has pledged to uphold these principles throughout the PPP process.

Dualing the highways for example at Mai Mahiu will offer a transformative solution to the chronic gridlocks that plague this vital transport corridor, according to users.

By expanding the road into a dual carriageway, traffic flow will be significantly streamlined, reducing bottlenecks caused by slow-moving trucks, holiday congestion, and frequent accidents.

This upgrade will not only enhance mobility between Nairobi and western Kenya but also strengthen regional trade links, making Mai Mahiu a more efficient and less hazardous transit point.
