The State Department for Medical Services under the Ministry of Health has issued a press statement refuting recent media reports that suggested the termination of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff contracts.
In a release dated 28th August 2023, Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga confirmed that no UHC staff contracts have been terminated.
Instead, the government is transitioning 20,000 UHC staff from contractual terms to permanent and pensionable employment, effective September 2023.
“This move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the health workforce and ensuring transparency in public resource management,” the statement reads.
The conversion process is being implemented collaboratively by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Public Service, the State Department for Public Service, and the Council of Governors.
The goal is to absorb UHC staff into the public service, enhancing job security and reinforcing Kenya’s push toward universal health access.
The Ministry reiterated its dedication to transitioning all legitimate UHC staff, emphasizing that the process is part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery across the country.
