Nairobi residents are in for a rare celestial treat this Sunday, September 7, 2025, when the city’s skies will light up with a spectacular Blood Moon.
The Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) has announced it will open its courtyard free of charge from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., offering the public a chance to witness the breathtaking lunar event.
The Blood Moon, also known as a total lunar eclipse, occurs when Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon.
During this alignment, the Earth’s atmosphere bends sunlight and scatters blue wavelengths, leaving behind a reddish glow that paints the moon in copper and crimson hues.
Unlike solar eclipses, this phenomenon is completely safe to watch with the naked eye.
According to astronomers, the eclipse will begin with the moon rising above the horizon at 6:40 p.m.
The total red phase will start at 8:30 p.m., reaching maximum visibility at 9:11 p.m., before fading out at 9:52 p.m.
The totality will last for an impressive one hour and 22 minutes, making it one of the longest lunar eclipses visible in recent years.
KICC’s central location and panoramic views make it a strategic vantage point for the event.
