The assassination of lawyer and Nairobi University senior lecturer Kyalo Mbabu has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for urgent action on the country’s deteriorating security.
Mbabu was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Nairobi, an incident that has triggered protests planned for Friday against what critics term as failed security operations.
Nyando MP Jared Okello condemned the rising cases of killings, urging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to intensify its work and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The government should protect its citizens and property. This murder case must be presented before the court of law,” Okello said, adding that insecurity has left Kenyans living in fear and tension.
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu called for tighter regulation of motorcycles, often linked to crime, arguing that their owners should be held accountable whenever crimes are committed.
“The criminals have courage and confidence to perform killings knowing that they can still be protected by politicians,” Nyutu said.
He also proposed that number plates be made larger to help CCTV cameras and witnesses capture crucial details.
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, who knew Mbabu as a seasoned lawyer handling complex tribunal cases, urged members of the public to provide any information that could aid investigations.
“The police will trace the person who might have threatened Mbabu or the dealings he had. The assassins were clearly assigned by someone else to kill him,” Maanzo said.
The killing has intensified calls for accountability and stronger security systems to restore public confidence.
