Former Chief Justice David Maraga has once again accused the government of diverting public money to bankroll early campaigns for the 2027 elections.

Speaking at a recent graduation ceremony at Karmel Park in Kisii, he alleged that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and certain Cabinet ministers have been disbursing state funds under the guise of empowerment programmes.

Maraga claimed these are not philanthropy but veiled vote‐buying, because “this is your money which has been taken from you and is now being given back as if a donation from the President and his government.”

He warned that this misuse is undermining essential services, especially education.

The former CJ observed that while funds apparently exist to distribute “empowerment”, there is a glaring inability to pay university lecturers. “

Students are out of class, and that shows the poor management we are under,” he said.

He urged Kenyans to reject leaders who mismanage public funds, insisting that the 2027 elections offer an opportunity: “This government has failed completely. In 2027, Kenyans should hand over power to people who can manage the nation properly.”

Maraga clarified that his county visits are not campaign rallies but stakeholder consultations, aimed at gathering input for what he calls a “people-centred manifesto.”
