Christopher Maato stole the spotlight at the International Day of Peace 2025 Sports for Peace Tournament, held on Saturday, September 20 at the Kisii Sports Club.
Playing off a handicap of 9, Maato carded an impressive 37 points to lift the overall winner’s trophy.
His consistent play and composure earned him top honors in a tournament designed not just to celebrate sporting excellence, but also to promote unity and social cohesion.
“I am truly honored to win this year’s International Day of Peace Golf Tournament,” said Maato after his victory.
“Beyond the scores, this event has reminded us of the power of sport in uniting people. I dedicate this win to my fellow golfers and to the cause of peace and cohesion that this tournament represents.”
The event, organized in partnership with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), drew 96 golfers from across the region.
In the men’s category, Zachhary Bichage emerged winner with 36 points, while Lilian Kong’ani carded 30 points to claim the ladies’ title.
Ameet Shah (34 points) and Geoffrey Ombachi (34 points) finished as first and second runner-up respectively.
NCIC Commissioner and Chief Guest, Danvas Makori, underscored the importance of sports in building bridges across Kenya’s social divides.
“Sports like golf provide a powerful platform to unite Kenyans across differences. This tournament shows that peace and cohesion can be nurtured both on and off the course,” said Makori.
Divisional champions included Jared Mogeni (Division 1) with 32 points, Joseph Ogweche (Division 2) with 31 points, and Moffat Makori (Division 3) with 30 points. Guest golfer Dorothy Koech topped her category with 29 points, while sponsor representative Semenye Jimmy won the sponsor’s category on 25 points, edging out Rosemary Were (23 points).
The “Most Diverse 4-Ball” prize went to the team of G. Yego, E. Manywanda, T. Osoro, and W. Kiche, who posted an average of 22.5 points.
On the course honors, Chardwick Otachi claimed the First Nine with 19 points, while Pravin Orenge matched that score to take the Second Nine.
Special awards included men’s longest drive, won by Chief Guest and KGU Honorary Secretary Jonathan Marucha, while Vera Rorey took the ladies’ longest drive title.
William Moturi secured Nearest to the Pin, and Wangui Muithathi (HCP 44) received the Best Effort prize with 8 points.
Beyond Kisii, NCIC also marked the International Day of Peace with activities across the country, including football tournaments at Gusii Stadium, interdenominational prayers in Kisumu, tree-growing in Amani Club schools, and community events in Kilifi and Mandera.
