Julius Kirwa has been named the Betika/SJAK Coach of the Month of September.
The recognition crowns his exceptional leadership during the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.
As Head Coach of Team Kenya, Kirwa steered the national squad to a remarkable fifth-place global finish, securing a total of 11 medals—three gold, four silver, and four bronze.
The award, jointly presented by Betika and the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), celebrates Kirwa’s strategic brilliance and calm stewardship, which were widely credited for Kenya’s success on the world stage.
Among the standout performances under his guidance were Faith Kipyegon’s historic double gold in the 1500m and 5000m races, Mary Moraa’s commanding win in the 800m, and Daniel Ebenyo’s silver in the 10,000m.
Speaking during the award presentation, Betika Marketing Executive Mercy Wahome praised Kirwa’s impact, saying, “Coach Kirwa’s strategic decision-making and calm leadership were instrumental in our success.”
“He has consistently demonstrated an ability to bring out the best in our athletes, and this award is a testament to his enduring impact.”
Kirwa received a personalized trophy and a cash prize of Ksh 100,000, a gesture that not only honors his contribution but also underscores the importance of recognizing coaching excellence in Kenyan athletics.

The SJAK/Betika Sports Personality of the Month Award also continues to spotlight individual athletes whose performances have elevated Kenya’s reputation in global competitions.
Recent honorees include Reynold Kipkorir Cheruiyot, who won gold in the men’s 1500m; Edmund Serem, gold medalist in the men’s 3000m steeplechase; Faith Cherotich, who earned bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase; and Doncas Ewoi and Lilian Odira, who claimed silver and bronze respectively in the 800m races.
SJAK Secretary General Mike Okinyi emphasized the significance of these recognitions, noting, “These young athletes are the heartbeat of Kenya’s future in athletics.”
“Their achievements reflect the depth of talent we continue to nurture.”
Past recipients of the monthly award include Ferdinand Omanyala for his sprinting prowess in the 100m, Hellen Obiri for her victory in the Boston Marathon, Kelvin Kiptum for setting a record in the London Marathon, and Faith Kipyegon for her world records in the 1500m and 5000m.
Others are Ruth Chepngetich for winning the Chicago Marathon, Mary Moraa for her World Championships gold, and Victor Kipruto for his triumph in the Buenos Aires Marathon.
Mercy Wahome added, “These awards are not just about medals. They’re about celebrating resilience, discipline, and the spirit of Kenyan excellence.”
