The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has condemned Sunday’s terrorist attack on the Jilacow Investigation Center in Mogadishu, describing it as a cowardly act by the Al-Shabaab militant group.

According to Somali authorities, security forces swiftly neutralized the attackers, preventing further casualties and averting a larger tragedy.

IGAD praised the Somali National Army and security agencies for their courage and professionalism.

The regional body said the foiled attack highlighted Al-Shabaab’s “growing desperation,” coming just days after Somali forces captured territory in Lower Shabelle and killed several senior militant commanders.

In a statement, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu expressed solidarity with Somalia.

“This attack will not shake Somalia’s courage or our region’s resolve. IGAD stands firmly with the people and Government of Somalia in the fight against terror and in pursuit of lasting peace and stability,” the official said.

The regional bloc reiterated its call for stronger regional and international cooperation in combating terrorism, stressing that peace and resilience in the Horn of Africa depend on united action.

The attack comes amid intensified efforts by the Somali government, with support from regional and international partners, to weaken Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity.

Over the past year, Mogadishu has rolled out a multi-pronged offensive combining military operations, grassroots stabilization programmes, and international security cooperation to reclaim areas long held by the group.

Al-Shabaab, which has waged a violent insurgency in Somalia for over 15 years, frequently carries out suicide bombings, assassinations, and complex attacks targeting both security installations and civilians.

Despite losing significant ground in recent months, the group remains a major security threat not only to Somalia but to the wider Horn of Africa region.
