The late Raila Amolo Odinga has been posthumously awarded the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (First Class – Chief of the Order), the nation’s highest civilian honour.

The award, conferred through a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette dated 20th October 2025, was signed by President William Samoei Ruto in recognition of Raila’s lifelong service, sacrifice, and contribution to Kenya’s democratic evolution.

The Gazette notice describes Raila as “a statesman of rare moral courage, a visionary patriot, a unifier of the people and a champion of justice.”

It acknowledges his unmatched role in shaping Kenya’s modern democracy — from his years as a political prisoner and reformist to his tenure as Prime Minister and later, the de facto Leader of the Opposition.

President Ruto’s tribute highlighted Raila’s enduring influence, service to humanity, and his pivotal role in fostering national unity during his final years.

The notice notes that even without holding any formal government position, Raila worked closely with the administration to advance development in his home region of Nyanza and across the country.

In recent months before his passing, Raila had reconciled with President Ruto, ushering in a new era of cooperation that saw major infrastructure and social projects launched in Nyanza — including the Homa Bay State Lodge, a modern stadium, housing schemes, and revived port operations in Kisumu.

The Gazette further praises Raila’s lifelong dedication to justice and equality, stating that he “leaves behind an inspiring legacy for present and future generations of Kenyans and Africans.”

In death, Raila Odinga has been immortalised among the few who hold Kenya’s highest honour — a fitting tribute to a man whose name will forever echo in the republic’s story of freedom and unity.

He was buried on Sunday in Bondo, Siaya County.
