Journalists in Uasin Gishu have been encouraged to uphold professionalism, safety, and ethical reporting as Kenya gears up for the 2027 General Election.

Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Nakuru Regional Coordinator Joseph Mecha stated that collaboration with stakeholders will strengthen professional relationships and enhance media sustainability during the election period.

â€śToday’s meeting has provided a platform to deepen cooperation between the European Union and Kenyan media stakeholders, fostering an enabling environment for free and responsible journalism,” he said.

He further noted that the Eldoret Media Hub will support journalists and amplify marginalised voices while offering training on ethics, fact-checking, and the protection of women journalists.

â€śWe are expanding safe workspaces and rolling out training on ethics, fact-checking, and the protection of women journalists,” Mecha added.

Uasin Gishu Journalists Association (UGJA) Chairperson James Gitaka praised the EU’s engagement with local media, noting that the collaboration affirms the vision for the Hub as a safe space and launchpad for young reporters.

â€śWhen we established the Eldoret Media Hub through MCK, we envisioned a safe space for journalists and a springboard for young and emerging reporters. Today, that vision is coming to life,” he said.

Head of the EU Delegation to Kenya, Cristina Barrios, emphasised the critical role of regional media hubs in countering misinformation and bolstering democratic resilience.

“Democracy thrives when citizens have access to trustworthy news. Regional journalism hubs like this serve as bulwarks against misinformation,” she said.

The meeting was organised by MCK in collaboration with UGJA and a visiting European Union (EU) delegation at the Eldoret Media Hub.
