The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a series of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi ahead of the 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, set for Sunday.
The measures, aimed at ensuring public safety and smooth coordination of the event, will take effect from midnight on Saturday, 25 October, until 2:00 pm on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the NPS said the Nairobi Southern Bypass will be closed from the Ole Sereni Interchange to Kikuyu Town for the duration of the marathon.
Motorists from Mombasa Road heading towards Kikuyu are advised to use Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way, while those travelling from Dagoretti South to Kikuyu should take Dagoretti Road.
Drivers moving between Lang’ata and Dagoretti South are encouraged to use Lang’ata Road through Karen.
The police assured the public that they are working closely with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), and marathon organisers to manage traffic and minimise disruptions.
The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, now in its 22nd edition, attracts thousands of local and international runners each year, making it one of the biggest road races in Africa.
The 2025 event will feature multiple categories, including full and half marathons, 10km and 5km races, and a wheelchair race.
Motorists have been urged to be patient, observe traffic regulations, and follow directions from officers stationed along affected routes.
The NPS warned that stern action will be taken against anyone found violating traffic rules.
The public is also encouraged to plan their travel in advance and avoid the affected roads during the closure period.
