Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i led a delegation of Gusii leaders to Opoda Farm to pay tribute to former Prime Minister (PM) Raila Odinga.
The delegation was received by Odinga’s widow, Ida and other family members.
Odinga, who died and was buried recently, is considered to be a statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire unity, democracy, and reform across Kenya for years to come.
Dr Matiang’i was accompanied by Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and Members of Parliament (MPs) Clive Gisairo, Anthony Kibagendi, and Obadiah Barongo.
Also present were former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, former Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ong’era, former Kisii Senators Prof Sam Ongeri and Chris Obure, and several other senior leaders from the Omogusii community.
The visit was both emotional and symbolic, underscoring a renewed spirit of solidarity within the Gusii leadership and their shared respect for Raila Odinga’s towering influence on Kenya’s political history.
Dr Matiang’i spoke warmly of his personal connection with the late opposition leader, recalling a moment when Raila stood by him during a difficult political season following the transition to President William Ruto’s administration.
“Raila was a brother in adversity,” Dr Matiang’i said.
“He stepped in when I was under immense pressure, ensuring that my voice wasn’t silenced. That act of solidarity is something I will never forget.”
His words reflected a deep sense of gratitude and admiration for the man many have described as Kenya’s moral compass in times of political turbulence.

The delegation and the departed leader’s family shared a light moment as they admired a framed picture of Odinga and Dr Matiang’i.
Turning to his Facebook page, MP Gisairo hailed Raila’s lifelong dedication to democracy and governance, saying: “Throughout his life, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga exemplified the values of democracy, good governance, and grassroots development.”
“In his honour, we remain committed to fighting for functional systems and accountable leadership in our nation.”
Following the tribute at Opoda Farm, Dr Matiang’i and his team proceeded to Nyosia for the burial of Mary Basweti Nyachae, where they joined family, friends, and fellow leaders in celebrating the life of a beloved member of the Nyachae family.
With the 2027 General Election on the horizon, Dr Matiang’i has indicated that he intends to seek the presidency.
In recent months, he has been actively building alliances and consolidating his support base, both in public and away from cameras.
