Kenya will join the global community in marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists on November 3rd.
The forum in Nakuru County is set to spotlight a growing digital threat: AI-facilitated gender-based violence targeting journalists.
Organised by the Katiba Institute and the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), the event will run from 8am to 3pm under the theme “Chat GBV: Raising Awareness on AI-facilitated Gender-Based Violence against Women Journalists.”
It aims to unpack how emerging technologies are being weaponised to silence, shame, and intimidate women in media.
The programme features two key sessions: one on gendered disinformation and its impact on press freedom, and another on crimes against journalists, with a focus on accountability and protection.
Key speakers include Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, David Omwoyo (CEO, MCK), Zubeida Kananu (President Kenya Editors Guild), and Christine Kuria (Executive Director, AMWIK).
The panel discussion will feature experts such as Jane Godia, Abraham Marita, and Josephine Karani, moderated by Christine Nguku.
The event coincides with broader efforts to address digital safety and media freedom, as AI tools increasingly enable targeted harassment.
The UN-designated day serves as a global reminder that impunity for crimes against journalists must end—and that women in media deserve both visibility and protection.
