LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Kenya’s Youth Unemployment Crisis Demands Urgent Action

Idle Kenyan youth.

Youth unemployment in Kenya is a growing crisis that requires immediate and coordinated intervention.

Each year, thousands of young people complete their studies only to face a job market that offers few opportunities aligned with their skills and aspirations.

This mismatch often leads to frustration, pushing some into crime, substance abuse, or other harmful behaviours.

It is a loss not only for the individuals but for the nation’s potential.

To address this, both government and private sector actors must collaborate to expand job creation and invest in entrepreneurship programmes.

Vocational training and online learning should be promoted to equip youth with practical, market-ready skills.

Parents and community leaders also have a vital role in mentoring and supporting young people, helping them stay focused and hopeful.

Together, we can nurture a generation that is self-reliant, innovative, and confident in shaping Kenya’s future.
