Young people in Kajiado County are embracing digital opportunities to earn a living, thanks to the Ajira Digital and Jitume programmes, which continue to equip them with valuable online work skills.
Janet Salash, a resident of Magadi, shared how the initiative has transformed her life.
“I’ve been able to earn money through online platforms because I do bidding and crocheting. After that, I post my work on TikTok, and my followers or other interested people message me to ask for prices, and we do business,” she said.
Janet encouraged other youths, especially those with disabilities, to take advantage of online and social media platforms to generate income.
Another beneficiary, Rose Resiato, also from Kajiado County, expressed her gratitude to Ajira for introducing the Jitume programme in their area.
“I thank Ajira for bringing Jitume and teaching us skills that help us earn our own money without depending on our parents,” she said.
“They’ve taught us how to make money even while still in school,” she said.
According to Fredrick Kipes, the Chief Officer in Magadi, the initiative has made a significant impact on the community.
“As an institution, we welcome the community at large. The lab is free of charge — you simply come, equip yourself with the skills, and we mentor you for one or two months,” he said.
“Once you’re able to earn, you’re given the opportunity to go and work for yourself.”
Kipes added that the programme has already trained three cohorts from the community, empowering many young people to become self-reliant through digital skills and online work.
The Ajira Digital and Jitume programmes, supported by the Government of Kenya and its partners, aim to equip young people with digital and entrepreneurial skills to promote self-employment and stimulate economic growth in local communities.
