An Osprey, a long-distance migratory bird of prey from Russia, has made an unexpected stopover in Siaya County, drawing excitement among residents and wildlife experts.

The fish-eating raptor, identified by a Russian tag attached to its left leg, was discovered early Friday morning after getting entangled in a fishing net at Ugingo Village, Usigu Sub-location, Central Yimbo Location.

Fishermen safely freed the bird and handed it over to local resident Joanes Oraro, attracting a crowd of curious villagers, according to Village Elder Eric Omuok.

Responding promptly, officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in Siaya, led by Deputy County Warden Byatt Shikanga, rescued the bird and placed it under professional care.

The Osprey — an exhausted traveler from the Palaearctic migration route — was later transferred to the Raptor Rehabilitation Centre at Soysambu Conservancy for examination and recovery.

The rehabilitation is being overseen by Dr. Isaac Lekolool, Head of the KWS Veterinary Department, and Dr. Simon Thomsett, a renowned raptor specialist.

Once fully recovered, the bird will be released back into the wild to resume its migration.

KWS commended the local community for their vigilance and support, emphasizing the public’s vital role in wildlife conservation.

The agency also acknowledged its continued collaboration with the National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Bird of Prey Trust.

“This rare visitor is a striking reminder of the incredible journeys migratory birds undertake — and how nature connects us across continents,” said a KWS spokesperson.

Members of the public are urged to report any injured or sick wild animals to KWS through the toll-free line 0800 597 000, WhatsApp 0726 610509, or the nearest KWS station for immediate assistance.
