The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) and Meru University of Science and Technology have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen journalism education, raise professional standards, and spark innovation in the media sector.

The agreement provides a framework for accreditation support, curriculum review, mentorship, and hands-on newsroom training—bridging the gap between theory and practice.

“This agreement underlines our commitment to helping universities produce ethical, highly skilled, and industry-ready journalists,” said MCK Director of Corporate Services Hillary Korir, who represented CEO David Omwoyo at the ceremony.

“By blending academic rigour with practical experience, we intend to safeguard the integrity of information and encourage innovation among students and staff.”

Meru University Vice-Chancellor Prof Romanus Odhiambo welcomed the collaboration, noting it formalises years of informal cooperation.

“Students need exposure to real newsroom practices and professional standards, and this partnership provides the ideal platform to deliver that,” he said.

MCK Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja added: “This partnership will help cultivate credible journalism and ensure students fully understand the ethical and practical demands of the profession.”

The MoU outlines cooperation in accreditation, media literacy, digital transformation, community media development, and joint research.

It also paves the way for innovation hubs such as fact-checking units and mobile-first training newsrooms, giving students vital real-world exposure.

Together, MCK and Meru University aim to nurture a vibrant, ethical, and forward-looking media ecosystem that prepares graduates to meet the challenges of modern journalism.
