President William Ruto and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi are in Washington, DC, witnessing the signing of the historic Rwanda–DRC peace agreement.

They also have other tasks to perform there before they return home.

They will join top Eastern African leaders at the United States Peace Institute on Thursday, where Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and DRC President Felix Tshisekedi will sign a peace and economic accord brokered by US President Donald Trump.

The deal aims to stabilise Eastern DRC, which has endured violent conflict and humanitarian crises for more than a decade.

It builds on the diplomacy initiated through the EAC’s Nairobi process and SADC’s Luanda process, now merged into a unified EAC–SADC initiative.

Ruto, the current EAC co-chair, has been instrumental in harmonising the two tracks, while Mudavadi, co-chair of the EAC–SADC interministerial committee, has coordinated regional support for the peace plan.

Mudavadi arrived in Washington on Tuesday as advance party and was received by Kenya’s ambassador to the US, David Kerich, and deputy ambassador Chris Kirigua.

During the trip, the President and PCS will also hold bilateral meetings with key US government departments, including Health and Trade, as well as sessions with the IMF, US International Development Finance Corporation, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

Business forums are also scheduled to deepen investment and cooperation.
