Kisii University has launched a new daycare and lactation centre, a move aimed at supporting staff, students, and young families while promoting early childhood development.
Speaking at the launch, University Council Chairperson Dr. Sarah Ruto highlighted the importance of investing in the first 36 months of a child’s life, describing them as a crucial period for learning and growth.
“Even though we may not fully understand everything a child learns in these early years, industrialised countries invest heavily in play and care because they know it builds a strong foundation for the future,” Dr. Ruto said.
She encouraged collaboration between the centre and the School of Education, allowing Early Childhood Education students to gain practical experience.
Dr. Rose Otieno, Chair of the Gender Mainstreaming Committee, said the facility will enhance employee wellness and productivity.
“An employee who is worried about their child cannot perform at their best. This centre shows the university cares for its staff,” she said, adding that trained personnel will provide safe, supervised care.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ogechi Nathan welcomed the milestone, noting that the facility will benefit Kisii University’s community of over 610 staff and 24,000 students.
Dr. Otieno emphasized that the centre is inclusive and open to all, calling it a model of care for higher learning institutions.
