AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has been named the Betika and Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Coach of the Month for December 2025.

The recognition came after a remarkable run of form which propelled his team to the top of the SportPesa Premier League standings.

Ambani, himself a former Leopards player, guided Ingwe to three victories and a draw during the month, including a memorable 1-0 triumph over Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby.

That result silenced his critics and reaffirmed Leopards’ ambitions of challenging for the league title.

His side also secured a 2-1 win against Ulinzi Stars and edged Bidco United 1-0, with their only dropped points coming in a goalless stalemate against defending champions Kenya Police.

Speaking after receiving the award, Ambani expressed his delight, saying he was thrilled to be honoured and proud of his team’s hard work and dedication.

He added that the squad was excited about what lay ahead in the New Year as they sought to mount a serious title challenge.

Betika Marketing Executive Marya Wachira congratulated Ambani, noting the pride in his achievement, particularly the derby victory.

She described it as no mean feat and urged him to continue producing upsets in the league.

SJAK President James Waindi also praised Ambani, calling him an inspiration to many former players who aspire to become coaches and highlighting the significance of his leadership at a club of Leopards’ stature.

Ambani’s recognition came after a competitive nomination process that included coaches from across different sports.

Among those considered were Bryan Mathews of the National Cereals and Produce Board handball team, Zadock Adika of the 3×3 basketball squad, Victor Ng’ani and Evans Owino who guided Team Kenya at the Africa Youth Championships, Patrick Sang of DCI women’s volleyball, and Simon Jawichire of Catholic Monks rugby.

Each had notable achievements in 2025, but Ambani’s derby heroics and consistent league performance ultimately earned him the accolade.
