Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has been nominated by President William Ruto as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The move carries both diplomatic weight and political symbolism, according to reactions by Kenyans active on social media.

Her nomination, transmitted to Parliament for approval, comes just months after Raila Odinga’s passing in October 2025, and is widely seen as a gesture that bridges Kenya’s political divides while reinforcing the country’s leadership in environmental diplomacy.

In the official statement, Chief of Staff Felix Koskei emphasized that Ida’s appointment is expected to “amplify Kenya’s voice on environmental issues and further reinforce the country’s longstanding leadership in environmental diplomacy.”

She will replace Ambassador Ababu Namwamba, who has been reassigned as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, marking a significant reshuffle in the foreign service.

Ida’s career has long been defined by education, civic leadership, and advocacy for social justice.

Beginning as a teacher at Highway Secondary and Kenya High School, she nurtured generations of young leaders before stepping into the national spotlight in the early 1990s as founding chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters, a key force in Kenya’s transition to multiparty democracy.

Her activism against authoritarianism and her commitment to women’s empowerment made her a formidable figure in the country’s political and civic life.

“Education and empowerment are the cornerstones of inclusive national development,” she has often said, underscoring the philosophy that has guided her work.

As the widow of Raila Odinga, whose decades-long struggle for democracy shaped Kenya’s political landscape, Ida’s elevation to a high-profile diplomatic role is seen by many as a recognition of the Odinga family’s enduring influence.

President Ruto’s decision to nominate her may be interpreted as a conciliatory gesture toward Raila’s supporters, signaling an effort to unify the country after years of political rivalry.

Ida has received numerous accolades, including Kenya’s highest civilian honour, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.), and international recognition for her contributions to education and gender equity.

Her leadership in the private sector, particularly through East African Spectre, has also demonstrated her ability to navigate both civic and economic spheres.

If approved by Parliament, Ida will step into a role that places her at the heart of global environmental diplomacy, representing Kenya at UNEP’s Nairobi headquarters.
