The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has appointed Dr. Patrick Ketiem as its new Director General, ushering in a new chapter of impact-driven agricultural research and innovation.

Dr. Ketiem succeeds Dr. Eliud Kireger, who concludes an 11-year tenure marked by transformative leadership, institutional strengthening, and the expansion of national and international research partnerships.

During his stewardship, KALRO enhanced its research systems, innovation pipeline, and contribution to food security and agricultural development.

The organization has paid tribute to Dr. Kireger for his exemplary service and lasting legacy.

A seasoned scientist, agricultural engineer, and research leader, Dr. Ketiem brings over 24 years of experience in agricultural research, innovation, and public service.

He has previously held senior leadership positions at KALRO, most recently as Institute Director at the Agricultural Mechanization Research Institute (AMRI) and as Chief Principal Research Scientist.

His expertise spans agricultural mechanization, climate change adaptation and mitigation, post-harvest management, agro-processing, and environmental sustainability.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ketiem has championed impact-oriented research, leading multidisciplinary initiatives across diverse agro-ecological zones, mobilizing significant research funding, and supporting the scaling of technologies that enhance productivity, resilience, and livelihoods for smallholder farmers.

His leadership philosophy emphasizes partnerships, accountability, innovation, and the translation of science into measurable development outcomes.

His appointment comes at a critical moment as KALRO sharpens its focus on climate resilience, sustainable food systems, and inclusive agricultural transformation.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Ketiem called on the KALRO fraternity to embrace unity and collective responsibility in delivering on the organization’s mandate. He urged researchers to strengthen collaboration, share resources, and build synergies to enhance innovation and impact in agricultural research and development.

Reaffirming his commitment to the organization, Dr. Ketiem said he would steer KALRO towards greater heights under a shared vision and mission of excellence in agricultural research and innovation for Kenya and beyond.

KALRO Board Chair Dr. Thuo Mathenge expressed confidence in the new Director General, urging staff to work collaboratively to take the institution to the next level. He noted that Dr. Ketiem’s proven leadership, deep scientific expertise, and commitment to impact-driven research would further strengthen KALRO’s role in advancing food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development.

KALRO welcomed Dr. Ketiem to the role, expressing optimism for a new era of bold leadership, strengthened partnerships, and science that delivers tangible impact for Kenya and beyond.
