Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has decried the surge of political violence and intimidation in the region, warning that such acts pose a grave threat to democracy and governance.

In a statement, Senator Onyonka expressed alarm over reports of attacks on public servants and interference with oversight work.

He alleged that “such acts are carried out by individuals associated with the Governor’s administration, who not only contravene the law but also undermine any semblance of rule of law and government accountability.”

The Senator was unequivocal in his rejection of political hooliganism: “There is NO room for violence or political hooliganism in Kisii County. Leadership must be provided through dialogue, civil discourse and due process of law – NOT through fear, coercion, or hiring thugs to do our bidding!”

Onyonka called upon Governor Simba Arati to take a public stand against the perpetrators, urging him to “denounce anyone in his sphere who is advocating for intimidation or chaos.”

He further appealed to security agencies, including the National Police Service (NPS) and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), to conduct impartial investigations and ensure accountability regardless of political affiliation.

The Senator urged calm and constructive engagement: “Kisii County is not a war zone; it is inhabited by hardworking folks who crave peace, development, and security.”

He reassured constituents of his commitment to defending democracy and upholding the rule of law.

Onyonka rallied the community to reject violence and strengthen democratic institutions: “Together, we can reject violence, strengthen our institutions, and build a Kisii County where leaders are accountable and citizens are protected.”
