A brief security scare disrupted President William Ruto’s youth empowerment event in Wajir on Thursday.

The incident occurred during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme at Wajir Stadium, where a unidentified man ran toward the podium as the President addressed the crowd. Security officers swiftly restrained him, preventing any harm.

“The National Police Service wishes to state unequivocally that at no time was the safety of His Excellency the President, other dignitaries, or members of the public compromised,” read a statement from police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja ordered a three‑day inquiry into the breach, directing investigators to identify procedural gaps and recommend immediate remedial measures.

“We must ensure such lapses are addressed to safeguard the integrity of presidential security,” he said.

The NYOTA programme, a flagship initiative under Ruto’s administration, provides start‑up capital to young entrepreneurs. Despite the disruption, the event continued smoothly, with the President reaffirming his government’s commitment to empowering youth in northern Kenya.

Witnesses praised the quick response of the Presidential Security Team.

“It was over in seconds. The officers acted with speed and professionalism,” said one attendee.

The National Police Service reassured Kenyans of its readiness to serve and protect, emphasizing that public confidence in security remains paramount.

Later Citizen TV managed to catxch up with the man who had since been released by the police and was on his way home.

He claimed that he did not have any sinster motive but only wanted to catch the President’s attention.
