The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has appointed Nashon Kondiwa as its new Director General for a three-year term, effective 17 February 2026.

Mr. Kondiwa, who has over 22 years of experience in ICT, innovation, intelligent transport systems, and digital transformation, previously served as NTSA’s Deputy Director of ICT.

In that role, he spearheaded the authority’s digital transformation and modernised service delivery.

Announcing the appointment, NTSA Board Chairman Hon. Khatib Abdallah Mwashetani said: “The Board is confident that Mr. Kondiwa’s proven expertise in ICT leadership, strategic vision, and deep institutional knowledge will steer NTSA to even greater heights.”

Established under the NTSA Act of 2012, the authority is mandated to regulate and coordinate road transport in Kenya.

Its core functions include registering and licensing motor vehicles, implementing road safety policies, conducting vehicle inspections, and enforcing traffic regulations.

NTSA also plays a central role in reducing accidents and harmonising the operations of different transport departments.

Kondiwa steps into the role at a time when NTSA faces significant hurdles.

Road traffic crashes remain a major public safety issue, with policy gaps and non-compliance undermining safety efforts.

The authority has also been criticised for inefficiencies, inadequate institutional capacity, and mismanagement of key projects such as the smart driving licence initiative.

Recent audits have further revealed weaknesses in NTSA’s control over its own digital systems, raising concerns about accountability and data security.
