National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Members of Parliament from Western Kenya to fully leverage the ongoing budget-making process to secure funding for development projects initiated by President William Ruto.

Speaking at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Bulimbo, Matungu Constituency, Kakamega County, the Speaker emphasised that the success and completion of key projects in the region will depend on adequate allocations in the national budget.

“I call upon all MPs from this region to utilise the current budget process to ensure sufficient funds are set aside for the completion of these projects,” said Mr Wetang’ula.

He noted that the President had revived several initiatives launched by previous administrations but later stalled, while also rolling out new projects aimed at transforming the region’s economic prospects.

According to the Speaker, Western Kenya has experienced renewed focus through investments in infrastructure, agriculture and housing.

Among the projects he cited were the revival of Mumias and Nzoia sugar factories, expansion and tarmacking of roads, construction of modern markets, and development of hostels in public institutions under the Affordable Housing Programme.

“The President came to Mumias when the sugar factory had shut down and workers had returned home without their dues. Today, the mill is back on track,” he said.

Mr Wetang’ula told congregants that Parliament plays a central role in determining how national resources are shared, urging legislators to prioritise completion of ongoing projects during scrutiny of the Budget Estimates.

At the same event, President Ruto’s private aide, Mr Farouk Kibet, called on the Luhya community to unite behind the Head of State’s re-election bid, saying the administration had prioritised long-stalled projects in the region.

“The President has demonstrated goodwill towards this region through action. The projects you are witnessing are proof of his commitment,” Mr Kibet said.

Senate Majority Whip Aaron Cheruiyot defended the government’s record, stating that the Kenya Kwanza administration had employed more than 100,000 teachers in under three years.

“President Ruto has employed more teachers than his four predecessors combined. Teachers can see the difference,” said the Kericho Senator.

Host Fernandes Barasa said construction of the long-stalled Kakamega Level Six Hospital had resumed following intervention by the national government.

“Both levels of government have now allocated funds and construction works are ongoing. This facility will significantly improve healthcare services in the region,” Mr Barasa said.

Lugari MP Innocent Mugabe and Matungu MP Oscar Nabulindo also expressed support for the President’s second-term bid.

However, the leaders cautioned young people against being drawn into political violence.

Mr Wetang’ula urged the youth to reject incitement and instead demand meaningful engagement and economic opportunities.

“Young people must protect their future. Being paid to cause chaos at political events undermines your own prospects,” he said.
