The Automobile Association of Kenya (AAK) has launched a new security-enhanced International Driving Permit (IDP) to support safe, credible and seamless cross-border travel for Kenyans.
The move marks a major milestone in strengthening cross-border mobility across East Africa, the continent and beyond.
The upgraded IDP features advanced security enhancements aimed at curbing fraudulent reproduction and eliminating corrupt printing by unscrupulous traders.
AA Kenya said the new permit guarantees authenticity, international compliance and global recognition, giving Kenyan motorists greater confidence when driving abroad.
Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, AA Kenya leadership said the initiative responds to rising travel demand among Gen Z Kenyans, government officials, business leaders, traders and professionals increasingly operating across borders.
“As regional integration deepens and cross-border trade expands, mobility is no longer a luxury but an economic enabler. This newly secured International Driving Permit safeguards Kenyan travelers while enhancing their credibility abroad,” the Association said.
The new IDP is expected to particularly benefit Gen Z, a fast-growing, travel-savvy demographic drawn to experiential tourism such as self-drive journeys across the East African Community and other African destinations.
It will also serve government officials on official assignments, entrepreneurs expanding regionally, cross-border traders and tourists seeking first-hand driving experiences abroad.
To further ease international use, AA Kenya said the remit of the new IDP will be translated into major global languages to enhance accessibility and acceptance across multiple jurisdictions.
As part of a broader mobility strategy, AA Kenya has partnered with the Touring and Automobile Club of Kenya (TACA), which provides Carnet de Passage services—often referred to as passports for vehicles—for motorists driving outside Kenya.
The partnership ensures travelers are equipped with both internationally recognized driving credentials and the required vehicle documentation.
The Association said the enhanced IDP integrates modern anti-counterfeit features to seal loopholes, protect motorists from exploitation and uphold international standards.
Kenyans have been urged to obtain International Driving Permits only through authorized AA Kenya offices and official channels.
AA Kenya noted that as Africa moves toward deeper economic integration under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the new IDP positions Kenyan travelers to participate in regional mobility securely, legitimately and with confidence.
