A heroic and electrifying entrance by the United Opposition into Gusii Stadium on Monday electrified the entire Gusii region, setting the tone for a political moment that has gripped residents and galvanized support across the region.
The stadium—packed beyond capacity with cheering supporters—erupted in a tidal wave of chants, drums and vuvuzelas as opposition leaders arrived to thunderous applause, delivering a spectacle of energy and hope rarely seen in this southwestern Kenya heartland.
The atmosphere was electric even hours before the principals took the podium as youth groups danced in synchronized celebration, waving flags and chanting rally songs, while families and elders stood shoulder to shoulder, their chants echoing into the late afternoon sky.
Bright banners and party colours, mainly of Dr Fred Matiang’i’s Jubilee transformed the stadium into a visual sea of political fervour, underscoring the deep anticipation surrounding the coalition’s visit.

When leaders finally stepped onto the stage, the crowd’s roar was deafening—an expression of excitement that went beyond mere political support to embody a profound sense of belonging and aspiration.
Earlier, there were fears that the supporters would be denied access into the stadium.
Some were therefore scattered in town, mainly at Capital Roundabout, while others lined up on both sides of the road, right from Cocacola Junction to the Central Business District.
Some goons who attempted to disrupt the gatherings had an unforgettable beating in Keroka and Kisii Towns.
When Dr Matiang’i and his co-principals in the opposition, including Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugine Wamalwa and George Natembeya arrived, the excitement hit fever pitch as welcomed them into the stadium.
In speeches that followed, the coalition—recently rebranded as the United Alternative Government—laid out messages of unity, economic reform and inclusion.
Addressing the crowd, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua declared: “From today, the official spokesman of this community is Dr Fred Matiang’i,” a pronouncement that drew sustained applause and applause from the buzzing arena.

The entry into Gusii followed a symbolic coronation ceremony held on February 23, 2026, at Ekerenyo Grounds in Nyamira County, where Dr Matiang’i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party presidential candidate, was coronated as a Kisii community elder and spokesman by Abagusii traditional leaders.
The cultural event, attended by United Opposition principals and regional elders, infused the political tour with historic and communal meaning.
During the ceremony, elders bestowed upon Dr Matiang’i a series of traditional items laden with symbolism: a special cloth signifying his elevated status, headgear symbolising power and responsibility, a stick representing peaceful leadership, and a whisk to be used in greeting and uniting the people during major occasions.
In explaining their choice of gifts, the elders said they could have offered him a traditional animal skin, but instead opted for attire that pointed to peace and unity rather than conflict.
A religious leader then prayed over the instruments, blessing Dr Matiang’i in his new role before formally releasing him to the United Opposition principals to carry his mandate across the nation.
In response, the technocrat turned politician expressed gratitude and solemnly accepted the role, assuring elders that their endorsement would guide his journey forward.
“Kwa council of elders nitakuwa nashauriana na nyinyi, sitakuwa naenda kando na muongozo yenu,” he pledged—promising to seek their counsel continually should he ascend to the presidency.
Speeches in the stadium drew heavily on shared concerns: the rising cost of living, youth unemployment, agricultural challenges and perceived neglect by the current administration.
The opposition leaders framed their message around economic opportunity, accountable leadership and governance reform—resonating deeply with the thousands who gathered.
Musyoka, another principal of the coalition, praised Matiang’i’s endorsement, saying the coronation “reflects trust, confidence and a collective decision by the community to speak with one clear and united voice.”
The three-day political tour continues through Nyamira and Kisii Counties, with planned engagements in West Mugirango, Kitutu Chache, Nyaribari Chache and surrounding constituencies.
The rallies are aimed at strengthening grassroots connections, listening to community concerns and building momentum toward a broader national agenda.
