The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has condemned the circulation of footage allegedly showing a prominent Kenyan personality being secretly recorded while purchasing and taking medicine at a pharmacy outlet.
In a statement, the professional body stressed that “recording any client within a pharmacy setting without consent constitutes a serious breach of privacy and healthcare confidentiality.”
It emphasised that pharmacies are healthcare environments where every individual, regardless of public profile or status, is entitled to dignity, discretion, and protection of personal health information.
PSK reminded the public that confidentiality in healthcare is non-negotiable, describing it as “a fundamental ethical and professional obligation.”
The society highlighted that pharmacists undergo advanced training in pharmacology, therapeutics, and patient safety, and upon qualification take an oath to uphold confidentiality, integrity, and accountability.
The organisation confirmed it is conducting due diligence to verify the identity and licensing status of the outlet and professionals involved, with regulatory action possible if violations are established.
“This incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring that pharmacy outlets operate under the supervision of qualified and licensed professionals who understand and uphold ethical standards,” the statement said.
PSK extended regret over the breach and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of pharmaceutical practice, noting that it will take appropriate action should any violation of professional conduct be confirmed.
