The Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK) has issued an advisory to its members and the wider tourism industry following heavy rains that have disrupted travel and claimed lives in the Maasai Mara.

In a statement, the society expressed condolences after a tour vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in the reserve, leaving clients unaccounted for.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected by this tragic incident,” said Lamech Magaki, Secretary of the Board.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across the country, while the Tourism Regulatory Authority has reinforced conservation rules, including a ban on off-road driving in protected areas.

Against this backdrop, TOSK urged operators to put safety above all else.

“Do not attempt river crossings—avoid swollen rivers, flooded drifts, or fast-moving water regardless of vehicle type or experience,” the statement warned.

It further reminded driver-guides to “prioritize guest safety over itinerary pressure” and to stay informed through constant communication with park authorities and lodge management.

The advisory also highlighted the closure of the Migori Bridge, which has disrupted cross-border travel between Serengeti National Park and Maasai Mara via the Isibania crossing.

Operators were urged to plan alternative routes.
