National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for stricter aviation safety regulations and heightened caution during adverse weather.

This follows the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngéno and three others.

Wetang’ula urged pilots and air service users to strictly adhere to safety protocols, including pre-flight weather checks, avoiding thunderstorms, and maintaining minimum visibility standards.

“You need to realise the vagaries of the weather at this particular time. We should consider limiting the use of helicopters,” he cautioned.

The Speaker revealed that he and his entourage had used the same aircraft barely two weeks before the crash, highlighting the unpredictability and risks of air travel during unstable weather.

He called on MPs to urgently review aviation regulations to strengthen safety standards.

“In other parts of the world, no helicopter can take off unless cleared by the aviation authority. We need more robust regulations,” he said.

Wetang’ula also led Parliamentary Service Commission members and MPs to the Karen home of the late Ngéno to console his widow, Nayianoi Ntutu, and extended family.

He eulogised Ngéno as a dedicated public servant whose leadership, particularly as Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works, contributed to the passage of the Affordable Housing Act, 2024.

“This is a tragic happening. Parliament has lost one of its finest leaders,” the Speaker said.

He announced a special motion to formally celebrate Ngéno’s life and suspended Wednesday’s parliamentary sitting to allow MPs to attend a memorial service at Africa Gospel Church (AGC), Karen.

The four victims will be laid to rest on Friday, March 6, 2026, in Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Narok County.

Burial arrangements for the pilot will be announced later.

The Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) assured the bereaved families of its full support for a dignified send-off.
