The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has asked motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution on the roads following persistent heavy rains across the country.

In a notice dated 4th March 2026, KeNHA highlighted increased risks of flooding, reduced visibility, and slippery road conditions, noting that the situation has already begun to affect travel in both urban and rural areas.

“The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast persistent rainfall across many parts of the country this season, with moderate to heavy downpours expected,” the advisory stated.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has also raised concerns about fog and slippery surfaces contributing to accident risks.

KeNHA urged road users to slow down, maintain safe following distances, avoid overtaking during heavy rain or fog, and never attempt to drive through flooded sections.

Motorcyclists and cyclists were advised to wear reflective gear, while pedestrians were cautioned against walking close to fast-moving traffic during downpours.

The Authority warned that heavy rains may cause traffic delays, temporary road closures, and heightened accident risks, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA Director General, reassured the public that the Authority is closely monitoring the situation and will respond promptly to affected road sections.

“Your safety remains our priority,” he emphasized.

KeNHA encouraged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent accidents during the rainy season.
