The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has welcomed the launch of Nation Media Group’s (NMG) Framework for the Use of Artificial Intelligence.
MCK described the news as a milestone for the country’s media industry.
In a press statement issued on Sundaythe Council praised NMG for embedding ethical principles such as accountability, fairness, privacy, and the “human-in-the-loop” approach into its framework.
“We commend the Group’s clarity of purpose: AI is to augment human intelligence, not replace it,” the Council noted, adding that the insistence on editorial oversight and labelling of AI-generated content sends a strong signal that quality journalism remains paramount.
MCK, however, cautioned that the framework’s success will depend on its implementation.
“Without adequate training for journalists, such frameworks will prove ineffective. AI literacy and ethical reasoning require sustained investment, not one-off workshops,” the Council stated.
It also urged vigilance against commercial pressures that could compromise commitments to avoid “filter bubbles” in personalised content.

Speaking during the launch, NMG Editor-in-Chief Dr Joe Ageyo highlighted the framework’s role in safeguarding editorial integrity while embracing innovation.
“AI is here to stay, but it must serve journalism, not distort it. Our framework ensures that technology strengthens our newsroom rather than weakens it,” Ageyo said.
The framework comes at a time when AI adoption in global media is accelerating, with tools like ChatGPT and generative AI reshaping content creation since 2022.
NMG’s policy is the first of its kind in East Africa, positioning the Group as a regional leader in responsible AI use.
MCK stressed that the framework should remain a “living document” subject to regular review as technologies evolve.
“New vulnerabilities will emerge, and regular updating will be essential,” the Council advised.
The Council called on other media organisations to follow NMG’s example, pledging its support to the sector in navigating the complex terrain of AI adoption.
