Police in Kenya largely don’t have a very good reputation and their relationship with them masses is often lukewarm.
Yet in their midst, there are those whose actions win the hearts of civilians.
This became evident recently following what began as a routine response to a road accident in Kisii, which quickly turned into a touching story of community appreciation for one police officer who simply chose to go the extra mile.
A photogrid circulating online (and which we have used in this story) captures two moments involving the same officer; moments that together tell a fuller story of duty, compassion and the power of gratitude.
In the first image, the officer is seen at the chaotic scene of a road accident at Kegati, where two men died and scores were injured.
Like many first responders, he appears sad and purposeful, helping rescue victims and ensuring they receive the situation is contained.
It is the kind of moment that often passes quickly in the rush to save lives, rarely attracting much attention beyond those directly involved.
In the second image, the same officer stands smiling warmly as a group of women — many of them mothers and members of the TikTok community in Kisii — gather around him at his place of work.
They had come specifically to thank him for his actions at the accident scene.
The women said they were touched by the officer’s willingness to go beyond the call of duty to ensure the victims received help.

For them, the visit was a simple way of showing that kindness and commitment do not go unnoticed.
The contrast between the two photographs is striking.
In one frame, the officer so far known as Derrick is immersed in the seriousness of a rescue effort.
In the other, he appears relaxed and cheerful, surrounded by smiling residents who wanted to personally express their gratitude.
It is a rare moment where the heroism of everyday public service meets the warmth of community appreciation.
Such gestures, though small, highlight the often unseen work of first responders who step into difficult situations without expecting recognition.
Road accidents can be chaotic and emotionally draining, yet officers and emergency workers regularly find themselves among the first to help victims and coordinate rescue efforts.
For the Kisii mothers and their TikTok community, the visit was also a reminder that social media can sometimes serve a positive purpose; bringing attention to acts of humanity and encouraging communities to celebrate those who make a difference.
And for the officer at the center of the story, the two images now stand as a simple but powerful contrast: one moment defined by urgency and responsibility, and another filled with smiles, gratitude and the reassurance that his actions mattered.
